Lying on the equator, with the Indian Ocean to its south-east, Kenya is bordered by Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, South Sudan to the north-west, Ethiopia to the north and Somalia to the north-east.
After decades of colonial rule the country gained its independence from Great Britain in December 1963 and on December 12 1964, the Republic of Kenya was proclaimed. Jomo Kenyatta then became its first president and remained in office until his death in 1978.
Kenya’s geography is remarkably diverse, incorporating great lakes, mountains, the iconic Great Rift Valley, the famous Maasai Mara game reserve, and so much more. Accordingly it is one of Africa’s greatest, and longest-established tourist destinations.
To AfricaAway Kenya is somewhat spoiled by too much tourism, although our experience is such that we are confident that we can still devise a remarkable holiday experience for you. In particular, AfricaAway has recently pioneered the introduction of classic Zambian-style walking safaris in Kenya. For more information on this new development, click here.
