Located in south-east Africa, Tanzania is bordered by the countries of Kenya and Uganda to the north, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, and Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to the south. Tanzania is home to Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, standing 5,895 m tall.

In the late 19th century, Imperial Germany conquered the regions that are now Tanzania (minus Zanzibar), Rwanda, and Burundi, and incorporated them into German East Africa. Following World War I, however, it became a British Mandate. British rule came to an end in 1961 after a relatively peaceful transition to independence. under Julius Nyerere.

As a game viewing, safari, destination, Tanzania is supreme, including as it does the famous Serengeti National Park, home to the hundreds of thousands of wildebeest that make up the celebrated annual migration, and less well-known (although actually, in many people’s minds) superior destinations such as Ruaha National Park and The Selous Reserve. So far as AfricaAway is concerned, Tanzania ranks equally with Kenya, close second only to Zambia, as a must-visit safari destination.
